A Legacy in the Making: Springbok meets the Markhor
The story of the Springbok Cafe began long before the first stone was laid in Hunza Valley. It is a story that spans 8,000 kilometres, from the Golden City of Johannesburg in South Africa to the towering spires of the Karakoram.
Our founder, a native Afrikaans speaker from Johannesburg, witnessed the dawn of the
“Rainbow Nation” – a period that instilled in her a lifelong belief in the power of community and cultural exchange. This spirit eventually led her to Pakistan, where she would spend the next three decades shaping the future of education.
The "Headmistress" Standard
Before she was a chef, she was a leader. With a career that included serving as an Assistant Director with the British Council and culminating in the founding and leadership of her own institution, Rhodene Academy in Karachi, our founder’s life has been defined by the pursuit of excellence.
Known simply as Ms Shenaaz, “The Headmistress,” she brings that same uncompromising discipline to the kitchen. In our cafe, there is no “shortcut” or “good enough.” Every process from the temperature of the Bukhari stove to the consistency of our dough – is overseen with a teacher’s eye for detail and a principal’s demand for quality.
The Soul of the Kitchen
While the discipline comes from the classroom, the flavour comes from the heart. Every dish served at the Springbok Cafe is a chapter of family history. These are not commercial recipes; they are family treasures, meticulously handed down from Grandmother to Mother to Headmistress.
When you bite into our signature fresh-baked buns or taste our traditional South African desserts, you are tasting generations of tradition. This is homeliness in its purest form –
authentic “soul food” that has travelled across oceans and decades to reach your plate.
to the Peaks
Today, the classrooms of Karachi have been traded for the quiet majesty of the Hunza Valley. This transition is symbolized by the Markhor looking back over the path travelled, while the Springbok leaps forward into a new adventure.
The Springbok Cafe is the culmination of this long road – a “Living Museum” where the resilience of South Africa meets the hospitality of the Hunza. We invite you to sit, stay a while, and become part of our ongoing story.
A Meeting in the Mountains
At the heart of our cafe lies a unique bond between two symbols of national pride.
- The Springbok: From the vast, sun-drenched plains of my home in South Africa, the Springbok represents agility, resilience, and the “Rainbow Nation” spirit I grew up with in Johannesburg.
- The Markhor: Here in the rugged, sky-piercing peaks of Gojal, the majestic Markhor stands as a symbol of the untamed beauty and strength of Pakistan’s mountains.
The Springbok Cafe is where these two worlds meet. It is a tribute to my South African heritage and my deep love for my adopted home in Hunza. Like the Markhor, we are rooted in these mountains; like the Springbok, we bring a leap of energy and a bold, “Lekker” flavor to the valley.
